SELECTED EXHIBITION | BY EXAMPLE

The Museum of Arts and Crafts

Itami, Japan

2010

StatementIn the work for By Example I wanted to make jewellery that was about intimacy and vastness. I wanted to explore the contrary impulses of exploration and settlement.

Formally this equated to looking at pattern and the way that pattern colonises 3-dimentional space. And then looking at the way objects colonise bodies and the way bodies colonise landscape.

I was particularly intrigued by the image of a settlement at the edge of a frontier.  As a boy I would draw scenes, imagined or real, and they would remain incomplete until a single figure was placed in them. There is something in this image of isolation that I find repeated in the image of a building within space.
