STATEMENT | A key component of the project that JamFactory's Metal Design Studio was contracted to undertake for the school were the developmental workshops between artists and students. These workshops were designed and run by the associate designers from the Metal Studio at the school to collect research material and prepare students to contribute in meaningful manner to the design development of a large scale metal artwork.
The inclusion of a natural theme in the work was identified by the school as a desirable outcome early on and the challenge for the artists became one of marrying this with the impressions and reflections of the students. The result is not an idealised view of nature but one that reflects on the real context of the work. By mirroring the near distant lines of the Adelaide Hills, mapping a course of the River Murray and representing the gnarled form of a Red Gum, the work deliberately contrasts an organic sense of place against the stark linearity of the school’s inner city location.
